Curtain Measuring Guide

Measuring for made to order curtains is easy but you've got to remember that the fnal look of the curtains will be determined by a few factors:

  • Fabric - pattern, style and the type of fabric
  • Length of the curtain (drop) - The most popular length is floor length (ending 2.5cm above the floor) but you can also have sill curtains (ending 1cm above the sill) or below sill curtains (ending around 15 cm below the sill or 2.5 cm above the radiator). Net curtains come is above sill length as well as floor, sill and below sill lengths. Drop measurements are usually taken from the top of the pole or track but please read the notes below for important information.
  • Heading - eyelet, tab top, slot & frill, panel curtains and pencil pleat (pleat styling can be less suitable for some heavy fabrics)

Measuring Width

When measuring a Curtain Track make sure to measure the width of curtain track (not the window).

When measuring a Curtain Pole measure the width of the pole, excluding the finials. A well fitted pole should extend 20 - 30 cm either side of the window recess to give enough space for pulling back curtains.

Headings you can choose from on dekoria.co.uk:

  1. PENCIL PLEAT HEADING

The drop measurement is taken from the top of the pole but please read on to make sure you have a pair of perfectly fitting pencil pleat curtains.

Drop: In pencil pleat curtains the fabric is gathered into pleats with a 3" curtain tape fitted to the back of the curtain. The tape we fit to our curtains has two rows of pockets to chose from and to place hooks in for hanging the curtain. The benefit of having 2 rows is that the length of the curtain can be adjusted by 1-2 inches, depending on which row you choose when you hang it. With most tracks/poles taking drop measurement from the top of the pole or track will ensure the curtain has the right length after fitting and the 2 rows will give you a bit more flexibility when hanging the curtains. Once the hooks are placed in pockets, the curtain can be attached with hooks onto runners on a curtain track (usually covering the track) or hung from a pole (usually revealing the pole).

Width: When ordering your curtains remember that when gathered the width of the curtain will reduce to approx half its original width so it recommended to DOUBLE the length of the pole - again this is something that you can adjust once you receive your curtains as you pull the strings yourself to achieve the perfect look and fit for your window.

The measurements/prices you see when you order our curtains are always for 1 curtain so if you wish to have a pair please make sure to buy in multiples of 2.

EYELET HEADING

This type of heading is only suitable for poles as the pole is threaded through eyelets to hang the curtains.

Drop: It is very important to add 2 cm  (approx 1 inch) to the drop measurement (which is taken from the top of the pole) as this fabric will appear above the eyelet on the curtain.

Width: When measuring for the width of the curtain please remember that the width of the fabric will reduce with gtahering. It is usually recommended to multiply the length of the pole by 1.5 for softer gather or up to 2 times for a rich gather with deep pleats, especially for heavier fabrics. Please take into consideration the space around your window - multiplying the width by 2 will mean deep pleats when curtains are closed, but also a bulk of fabric on the sides of the window when curtains are pulled back, so make sure you have this space on the sides of the window and this rich look goes with the style of the room. If you're not sure which option to choose, multipyling the width by 1.6 should work for most spaces/interiors for eyelet heading.

The measurements/prices you see when you order our curtains are always for 1 curtain so if you wish to have a pair please make sure to buy in multiples of 2.

TAB TOP HEADING

This type of heading is only suitable for poles as the pole is threaded through tabs to hang the curtains.

Drop: The drop measurement is taken from the top of the pole - this includes the tabs.

Width: When measuring the width of the curtain please remember that the width of the fabric will reduce slightly while hanging on the pole. It is usually recommended to multiply the length of the pole by 1.5 for softer gather or up to 1.7 times for a rich gather with deeper pleats, especially for heavier fabrics. Please take into consideration the space around your window - multiplying the width by 1.7 will mean deeper pleats when curtains are closed but also a bulk of fabric on the sides of the window when curtains are pulled back, so make sure you have this space on the sides of the window and this rich look goes with the style of the room. If you're not sure which option to choose, multipyling the width by 1.6 should work for most spaces/interiors for tab top heading.

The measurements/prices you see when you order our curtains are always for 1 curtain so if you wish to have a pair please make sure to buy in multiples of 2.

SLOT TOP & FRILL HEADING

Slot & frill heading is a curtain with a 5 cm slot through which the pole is threaded through.

Drop: The drop measurement is taken from the top of the pole and it does NOT include a 5cm frill that will appear above the pole. When ordering slot and frill curtains simply request the drop from the pole to the floor (or any other length you need) and don't worry about the frill - this will be added on by us while we're making the curtains.

Width: It is usually recommended to multiply the length of the pole by 1.5 for softer gather or up to 1.7 times for a rich gather with deeper pleats, especially for heavier fabrics. Please take into consideration the space around your window - multiplying the width by 1.7 will mean deeper pleats when curtains are closed but also a bulk of fabric on the sides of the window when curtains are pulled back, so make sure you have this space on the sides and it goes with the style of the room.  If you're not sure which option to choose, multipyling the width by 1.6 should work for most spaces/interiors for slot & frill heading.

The measurements/prices you see when you order our curtains are always for 1 curtain so if you wish to have a pair please make sure to buy in multiples of 2.

PANEL CURTAINS

Panel curtains are very similar to slot & frill curtains - attached to the pole with a 5 cm slot through which the pole is threaded through. However, there is no fabric appearing above the pole so no extra material is required.

Drop: The drop measurement is taken from the top of the pole.

Width: Panel curtains are meant to be flat pieces of fabric - with no gather -  and they are not meant to close (not suitable for privacy) so it is usually recommended to order the total width that covers no more than 2/3 of the pole.

The measurements/prices you see when you order our curtains are always for 1 curtain so if you wish to have a pair please make sure to buy in multiples of 2.
